American Dog Tick - Dermacentor variabilisHabitatAmerican dog ticks prefer overgrown vacant lots, waste farm fields, weedy roadsides, and edges of paths and hiking trails (William 1998). Its habitat includes wooded areas, abandoned fields, medium height grasses and shrubs between wetlands and woods, and sunny or open areas around woods (Sonenshine 1991). High light intensity and low relative humidity stimulate questing behavior (Sonenshine 1991). They wait on grass and weeds for a suitable host to brush against the vegetation (William 1998).
