Efficacy against sand flies and mosquitoes

  1. Has the efficacy of advantix been tested against mosquitoes or sand flies in an external environment?
  2. Some owners maintain that they do not need lasting prevention of cardiopulmonary filariasis, and also point out that advantix does not show 100% efficacy against mosquitoes on Day 28.
  3. Can advantix prevent transmission of leishmaniosis, given its reduced efficacy in the second part of the month?

Has the efficacy of advantix been tested against mosquitoes or sand flies in an external environment?

It is practically impossible to evaluate the repellent effect in a natural environment such as a house or a kennel.
It is not possible to assess how many insects are present, how many do not come near and how many have a feed of blood.
The only way is in a controlled environment by evaluating the difference between a treated group and a control group in the number of insects with blood in their abdomen.

Some owners maintain that they do not need lasting prevention of cardiopulmonary filariasis, and also point out that advantix does not show 100% efficacy against mosquitoes on Day 28.

advantix is not indicated for the prevention of cardiopulmonary filariasis.
It is true however that, in studies which were carried out, the product showed significant repellent activity against mosquitoes (for Culex pipiens, antifeeding efficacy was 100% four weeks after the application). This activity should be considered as auxiliary in preventing the dog being continually attacked and bothered by mosquito bites.

Can advantix prevent transmission of leishmaniosis, given its reduced efficacy in the second part of the month?

Prevention of leishmaniosis cannot be left just to a repellent product. Sand flies are present in large numbers in endemic areas and even a percentage of close to 90 does not guarantee absolute protection. It is therefore necessary to reduce exposure times at dusk and at night, by keeping the animals indoors during these hours, using "atomiser" products or fixed mosquito nets and by reducing to a minimum the length of the evening stroll.
